Thank you, Lorraine. Though I am not completely opposed to a joint conference, I do have some concerns. Positives of our current annual UNYOC conference are that it is small - excellent for regional relationship building; relatively inexpensive - accessible for even the smallest of professional development budgets; and compact - a meaningful amount of education/networking without requiring multiple days away from the office.

If a joint conference will infringe upon what is special about UNYOC, then I would ask the question, is it worth it? Planning a joint conference sounds like an enormous undertaking and it will be expensive. There will be more resources and hands on deck, but also more opinions. The overarching goal/motivation needs to be pretty compelling. At this point, I don't know exactly what the goal is. What is it that UNYOC and NAHSL hope to gain? Do UNYOC and NAHSL goals align?

Importance: High

Good evening,

I have read the emailed responses about the NAHSL/UNYOC joint conference suggestion for 2022. I have also spoken to a number of people privately.
I want to stress that nothing has been decided at this point.

When I first sent you the email from Beth Dyer, my goal was to gauge the reaction of our leadership regarding the joint-conference idea in-and-of itself.
This decision, indeed any decisions about where we hold our conferences, should be made by discussion and vote by UNYOC leadership.

To help us along, I have attached a Word document that has more details to consider regarding a joint conference us and other MLA chapters, after 2022.
Please read the document and respond to the Action Items by March 4th.

If you have any suggestions about how I could better conduct this discussion, I'm open to hearing them.

Best Regards,
Lorraine

Subject: [unyoc-planning] RE: Proposal for a joint chapter conference 2022

Good afternoon,

Please see Beth Dyer's email below regarding the possibility of a joint conference in 2022. I realize that we have already begun planning our conference in Clayton, NY<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.1000islands-2Dclayton.com_&d=DwMFAg&c=4sF48jRmVAe_CH-k9mXYXEGfSnM3bY53YSKuLUQRxhA&r=CyKzVwWY92sYAMlpCx8AMIJaYqYAMgoP0J9XZHPRnWmxEWQnp3R9JjMnLvqCaODZ&m=egj3b1J4HApCc2sU5rabBWusYIAYPzS87XxIB7NchE0&s=ucCRfWrzV7vbgwnky8rzAGpgowfQOO7QrZEhVfVgYzg&e=> in 2022.

By the time we get to this conference, Olivia will be the Immediate Past Chair and two wonderful but as-yet-unknown people will be the Chair and Vice Chair.
As such, I'm not sure how to adjudicate a discussion with such far-reaching implications.

Perhaps we can start by discussing whether a joint conference is something that we would want to do?
Kim, I think your opinion is very important, given that you'll be the Chair of Conference Planning. Anyone else whose term on the BOD extends to 2022 should also make sure their voice is heard.

Best Regards,

Lorraine

Subject: Proposal for a joint chapter conference 2022

Good morning Lorraine,

I hope this email finds you well! I am the chair of NAHSL this year and reaching out to you in your role as UNYOC chair.

NAHSL is in the early phase of planning the 2022 annual conference. This is typically a 2.5 day event that brings together librarians and other information professionals that is held in later October/early November.

We all know that our geographic region is home to some of the most talented and innovative librarians as well as home to some of the most prestigious health sciences libraries in the world. We are reaching out to you to see if there is interest in the UNYOC chapter joining forces with NAHSL for a joint conference in 2022. We are also asking other surrounding chapters including NY-NJ and Philadelphia. It could be an epic conference!

Naturally, the details are not figured out and we recognize that there are more questions than answers but at this point, we are trying to gauge interest and to determine if this is possible. Please confer with your Board and let us know if you'd like to continue this discussion. Thank you for considering!

Sincerely,

Beth Dyer, NAHSL Chair
