[CHPFacultyStaff] Call for SURF Mentors

Dear Colleagues,



Need help collecting preliminary data for a grant? Consider becoming a mentor for the Upstate Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The SURF program attracts outstanding undergraduate students to campus for a 10-week research immersion program. If your lab is selected, you will have the opportunity to direct their research over the summer.



If you wish to become a mentor in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURF), please let me know (torbittm at upstate.edu<mailto:torbittm at upstate.edu>)  and/or e-mail SURF Coordinator, Andrea Cifonelli, at cifonela at upstate.edu<mailto:cifonela at upstate.edu>. Please also provide a one-line description of your research program and your web page URL to be sent to prospective students.



The College of Graduate Studies funds the cost of your SURF student.



Please note that your obligations would be:

* Being in town for most of the summer and being a true mentor.

* Offering at least some regular one-on-one interaction with the student, even if you assign the student to a post-doc or other senior research assistant for more daily contact.

* Consider giving one 50-minute presentation on your research.

* Attending your SURF student's research proposal presentation, journal club, and their final, end of the summer research summaries, as well as an introductory get together (total of 4 mandatory meetings for the summer).

* In September, evaluate the SURF students with regards to their acceptability into our Upstate graduate program.



The 2025 program will run from Monday, June 2, through Friday, August 8. Please consider participating in the SURF Program. This program attracts excellent undergraduates from all over the country.
