Work and life look different across generations. Colleagues from different age groups often hold distinct beliefs about what it means to be committed, available, and well. Some were shaped by eras that prized loyalty and long hours, while others prioritize boundaries, flexibility, and personal time. These differences can quietly create tension, misunderstanding, or judgment on the same team, especially in the emotionally demanding setting of healthcare. In this Schwartz Rounds session, panelists will share personal stories about how their own generational backgrounds, family experiences, and values have shaped their approach to work-life balance, and about moments when those differences challenged or enriched their relationships with colleagues. Together we will explore how to meet one another with curiosity and compassion rather than assumption and how honoring our diversity of perspectives can strengthen connection, support well-being, and deepen the care we give to patients and to each other.
