Making Ordering Easier

We continually look to make using Epic easier. As of May 1, all orders in Epic (other then chemotherapy and ambulatory controlled substances) will no longer require re-entry of your password (or using Imprivata). Simply place the orders you want and click the sign orders button.

Why we are able to make this change:
As EMRs have been adopted more widely, the legal landscape has changed. This improved workflow has become a new standard of care in NYS.

Risks to providers / patients:
This change introduces 2 risks both associated with walking away from a computer without signing out. If you walk away from Epic still signed in, others can place orders on your password. By policy you will be responsible for these orders.  Secondly, if another user leaves Epic signed in it si possible for you to walk up and think the chart open to a patient as you left the system. This could result in placing orders on the wrong patient.
Issues such as these are mitigated by signing out (or locking) of Epic every time you leave the computer.

Please remember to sign out of Epic before you leave a computer unattended.

Why we are doing this:
This project was a collaboration between the the CIO (Mark Zeman), the CMO (Amy Tucker), MedStaff (Leslie Kohman)  and the CMIO (Neal Seidberg).  We are dedicated to improving your experience using Epic. Recent changes to do this have included improving how fluids are ordered in Epic and an improved radiology system to show studies within Epic instead of separately opening and logging into Synapse. Additional changes are also coming including voice recognition. If you have any wishes or ideas on avenues of improvement you would like to see, please reach out to us.
