[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - Urinalysis Microscopic Review/Urine Culture Screen Change

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing. In an attempt to keep us all on the same page, the Laboratory Formulary Committee will be regularly sending out emails with recent updates and guidances. Below are the short versions of relevant changes. More in-depth resources about the changes are attached.

Urinalysis Microscopic Review/Urine Culture Screen Change: Urine samples sent for urinalysis are tested for multiple analytes and the spun sediment is reviewed microscopically.  This microscopic review has very limited utility in patients with negative leukocyte esterase, negative nitrites, and negative hemoglobin.  Beginning December 14th, 2021, urinalysis with reflex microscopic review (LAB348) specimens with a positive leukocyte esterase, positive nitrites, or positive hemoglobin will automatically be evaluated microscopically.  Urine specimens negative for all 3 of these analytes will not be analyzed microscopically.
For those specimens ordered as Urinalysis with reflex urine culture (LAB2859), the same parameters will be used for which specimens will be evaluated microscopically and the urine culture will be reflexively set up if either the leukocyte esterase or nitrite is positive.
