[LabUpdates] Lab Formulary Committee Updates - Folate and Procalcitonin testing change, CJD specimen testing

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.

Serum Folate and Procalcitonin Testing change:  Serum Folate and Procalcitonin are ordered very frequently for inpatients despite have very limited indications. Starting February 6th, 2025, testing for serum Folate for all inpatients and Procalcitonin for adult inpatients can only be ordered by an attending physician, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant.  Trainees will not be able to place these orders.  Please see the attached education for more details.  As a reminder, also attached is the guidance sent out previously of indications for Folate testing.

CJD Specimen Update : Testing for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (aka CJD) has a new EPIC test code: LAB9920.  This testing is performed by Mayo Clinic Laboratories.  Please note that the collection requirement for these samples has been updated by our reference lab. Samples must be collected in a blue top Sarstedt vial. Please see "specimen" requirements on the Mayo website below. These vials can be obtained from the Core laboratory prior to specimen collection.
