<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Segoe UI",sans-serif">Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing. In an attempt to keep us all on the same page, the Laboratory Formulary Committee will be regularly sending out emails
 with recent updates and guidances. Below are the short versions of relevant changes. More in-depth resources about the changes are attached.</span><o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><a name="_Hlk86927969"><b>Blood Product Shortage:</b> </a>Since the start of the COVID pandemic, the supply of blood products nationally has been very restricted.  The blood product reserves of the American Red Cross have now been exhausted
 and the supply of all blood products to Upstate’s hospitals will be severely curtailed.  The most critical of these shortages is O- RBCs and so we will be providing
<b>O+ RBCs for all transfusions in all patients without a known blood type starting 12/16/2021</b>.  Appropriate caution should be used when deciding whether to transfuse in these situations.  We will also be working with anesthesia, surgery, and proceduralists
 to evaluate the amount of RBCs that are ordered for each surgery/procedure.  Please see the attached guidance for additional information.<o:p></o:p></p>
