Forwarded message from Dr. Lesperance:

Hello MD/PhD students,

Would you like a brief return to a (simulated) clinical experience? Are you interested in learning more about the care of older patients and working with students from another health profession? You are invited to join pharmacy students from Binghamton University in a virtual exercise that involves medication reconciliation and a geriatric well visit appointment.

Each small group will be assigned to meet for one hour on Tuesday March 9 (between 3 and 5 PM) and one hour on Thursday March 11 (between 3 and 6 PM). Some prework will be given in advance - assessing the patient’s medication list for problematic drugs in the elderly. Each group will meet on March 9 to review a patient case (like SPE cases) and plan a meeting with the SP, which will include a falls risk assessment and MMSE. On March 11, each group will meet with the SP to conduct an interview and then debrief.

You may have had a geriatric experience during your first year of medical school. This will give you a chance to review some of what you learned during that visit. You will also get to meet some pharmacy students!

I had targeted the M1 students for this (because of their schedule) but am including you in case some of you want to take advantage of this occasion to practice your interviewing skills and mental status exam and learn about medications that can be problematic for elderly patients and how to assess them for risk of falling. It should be informative, useful, and fun!!
