Hello all,

It is time for my annual reminder about PSTP programs in Emergency Medicine. In the past 1-2 years, we have had some good publications as a specialty that may help guide your EM-bound MD/PhD trainees in choosing a research-supportive residency:

Emergency medicine residency pathways for MD/PhD trainees: A national cross-sectional study of physician-scientist training programs

Expanding and supporting physician scientists in EM is one of the 2030 strategic goals put forth by our specialty as a whole<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34363718/__;!!GobTDDpD7A!OjKFcjcEL278HJqE3CXa-cl73uuzc19BYDph1XT2WiBr1-ojH3vwfItcpybkaX9GJkKAL_3Xv-eF4SCtzab-x7NQcizR$>.

Those in the field leading the way to make this pathway a full supportive reality in Emergency Medicine are:

Dr. Nicholas Mohr (University of Iowa): nicholas-mohr at uiowa.edu
Dr. Colin Greineder (University of Michigan): coling at med.umich.edu
Dr. Philip Mudd (Washington University): pmudd at wustl.edu
Dr. Will Sharp (University of Chicago): wsharp at bsd.uchicago.edu
Dr. Karen Cyndari (University of Iowa): karen-cyndari at uiowa.edu

I recently transitioned from EM PSTP to junior faculty and obtained my K08 this past year. The others are all R01 investigators. This pipeline is real and they helped make it for me, so if you have trainees who are interested in EM as a specialty, please have them reach out. The point is not to recruit them to any specific one place, but to make sure we provide a solid transition point to residency, fellowship, and beyond. For any basic scientists, we can provide direct mentorship through the Emergency Medicine Basic and Translational Science group, managed by Drs Greineder and Sharp. For more clinical scientists/epidemiology-based research, EM has been very well established for decades and we will happily provide introductions for trainees. Dr. Mohr is nationally recognized expert in this area. As a somewhat recent grad of an established MD/PhD program, I know how difficult it can be to provide EM-focused career advice. We would like you to know we are willing to fill that advice gap.

EM research bridges everything from targeted drug delivery (Greineder) to telehealth sepsis care (Mohr) to T cells in influenza (Mudd) to resuscitation science (Sharp) to joint space immunology (Cyndari). It is bench work or epidemiology or clinical trials, or all of the above. Please do not feel your trainees will be in any way limited in what they can research as EM physician scientists. Our research is as diverse as our patient populations.

Thank you for your time, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions or forward this email to interested parties,

Karen Cyndari, MD, PhD
Associate Director, EM PSTP
Assistant Professor

Good morning dual degree program directors,

I am the Emergency Medicine PSTP Associate Director at the University of Iowa. I wanted to get the word out about our unique program<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://medicine.uiowa.edu/emergencymedicine/education/physician-scientist-training-pathway-pstp__;!!GobTDDpD7A!OjKFcjcEL278HJqE3CXa-cl73uuzc19BYDph1XT2WiBr1-ojH3vwfItcpybkaX9GJkKAL_3Xv-eF4SCtzab-xwynwCP0$> for EM-bound trainees.

Our group recently published<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10955610/__;!!GobTDDpD7A!OjKFcjcEL278HJqE3CXa-cl73uuzc19BYDph1XT2WiBr1-ojH3vwfItcpybkaX9GJkKAL_3Xv-eF4SCtzab-x1ZIT4hx$> on the 22 programs nationwide who may be a good fit for these students. As many of you are no doubt aware, EM doesn't have the greatest track record with NIH-funded research. Fortunately, our specialty is aware of this and has set nationwide goals<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34363718/__;!!GobTDDpD7A!OjKFcjcEL278HJqE3CXa-cl73uuzc19BYDph1XT2WiBr1-ojH3vwfItcpybkaX9GJkKAL_3Xv-eF4SCtzab-x7NQcizR$>--which means opportunity for immense departmental support at the trainee and junior faculty levels. Yes, basic science included.

If you have trainees who are interested in EM and not sure how to continue their physician-scientist journey, please forward my email and contact information. I would like to connect them with successful mentors nationwide in fields of interest, even if they have no interest in Iowa specifically. The wonderful thing about EM is that we see everyone, and every pathology. All research is likely therefore applicable, and there is a broad range of mentors available.

Thank you for your time and happy to answer any questions or concerns.
