Class of 2028,

We know that you are curious about your academic schedule for the week of September 23.

We are waiting to hear back from some guest speakers, so the details of Tuesday-Thursday are not set, but the general structure of the week is as follows:

Monday, September 23: Target date for MCM grade release. Rest Day (no required activities)

Tuesday, September 24 - Thursday September 26: Interactive class time (required)

Friday, September 27: Individualized, Based on MCM Unit Exam score.

* Students who score 70% or higher on the exam may use Friday as independent learning time - e.g., exploring 3rd party resources, preparing for FSC.

* Students who score 60-69.99% on the MCM Unit exam while also passing the Active Learning Component may choose to take the MCM Remediation Exam* with permission from the MCM Course Director(s).

* Students who score below 65% on the MCM exam, or who score 60-69.99% and choose not to remediate the exam on Friday, should plan to use Friday as Future Success Planning Time^.

^Future Success Planning Time:

Students who score below 60% on the MCM Unit Exam: Do Not Panic. As long as you score 70% or above on the Active Learning Component, your course grade will temporarily be recorded as Conditional (CO). Upon successful remediation, this grade will be replaced with a Pass (P) on your transcript. If you do not remediate on Friday, you may take a remediation exam during Winter Break or Summer Break. In that case, we recommend using Friday as a time to meet with the Educational and Career Success Office, your advisor, or your tutor about course content, time management, study skills, and earning a better score on the FSC Written Exam.

*Rapid Remediation Exam:

Students who score >70% on the MCM Active Learning Component and 60-69.99% on the MCM Unit Exam have the option (with permission) to remediate their MCM written component by sitting for a Remediation Exam on Friday September 27. Alternatively, remediation can take place during Winter Break or Summer Break. You may want to consider rapid remediation on September 27 if you have specific content gaps that might be easy to fix in a short turnaround time (ex. You were unable to review all of the content in depth, there are one or two concepts you still need to master, etc.) Students must receive approval from a course director before attempting remediation.

* Advantages of Rapid Remediation: The material from MCM is fresh in your mind, and it may be easier to identify gaps immediately following the test instead of down the road. Additionally, clearing the slate now means you won't have to take the time to do so later in the year.

* Disadvantages: Students should not rush to remediate if they had multiple gaps in their content knowledge or if they have any ongoing distractions (like illness). Failing a remediation exam results in a permanently recorded grade of "F" for the course. This would also require remediation of the entire course (including both the Written and Active Learning Components). For this reason, students who are considering Rapid Remediation must first discuss it with a course director (Drs. Greenblatt or Maimone).

As sessions are confirmed for Tues 9/24-Thurs 9/26, they will be added to the calendar, and we will send out a full update as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

The UME Office
