Subject: [Med2026] new Bioinformatics Elective

The Bioinformatics Elective is now open for registration on MyUpstate ("Biomedical Informatics - 13933 - RSCH 6501 - CCR"). The course will start in late March or early April and run through May or June. It provides an overview of medical informatics concepts and methods, including navigating the TriNetx platform, creating population studies, and composing research protocols. A selection of example projects is available, with faculty and residents serving as mentors for broader learning and collaboration.
Instructor: Dr. Yanli Zhang-James, MD PhD
This 1-credit elective includes 7 hours of lectures, 7 hours of labs, and a 2-hour final oral presentation (~20 minutes per project). Additional effort outside of class is required as this is a project-based course. Lectures and labs will be held via Zoom, likely during flexible hours, with final presentations in person (or hybrid).
Students will be expected to deliver both a final oral presentation and a poster (timing for poster presentations can be flexible), and are encouraged (but not required) to prepare a manuscript for publication. Dr. Zhang-James will offer weekly office hours and mentorship for manuscript preparation post-course.
Enrollment is limited to 15 students, with plans for around 5 projects. Please register by the end of the month. If you're interested but timing is a concern or the class is full, reach out by email—this course will be offered again in the fall or early next year.
For more details, feel free to contact Rachel Aber (MS4, aberr at upstate.edu) or course instructor Dr. Zhang James (zhangy at upstate.edu).
