Bridging Troubled Waters: Improving How Overloaded Healthcare Systems Can Best Prepare for and Respond to Disasters

Presenters:

(1) Paul Biddinger, MD

Chief Preparedness & Continuity Officer

Chief, Division of Emergency Preparedness in Department of Emergency Medicine

Mass General Brigham

(2) Kyan C Safavi, MD MBA

Associate Chief Medical Officer

Mass General Brigham

Assistant Professor of Anesthesia

Harvard Medical School

Lecture Summary:

The United States healthcare system is experiencing a compounding capacity crisis, characterized by unprecedented operational strain and severely overcrowded facilities. At the same time, disaster scenarios and threats in the United States are also growing, shifting from isolated, seasonal emergencies to continuous, interconnected, and increasingly expensive crises. In the face of these very concerning trends, it is more important than ever for hospitals and other healthcare organizations to optimize and integrate their systems for capacity management and disaster response. Drs. Safavi and Biddinger will discuss the coordinated care delivery structures, operational processes, and enterprise-level data used to manage ongoing capacity strain within their system, as well as the ways in which those efforts are integrated into their system’s emergency response. Additionally, they will discuss how their system collaborates with others to support regional inter–health system coordination during periods of extreme stress

The lecture will be broadcast on videocast on NIH Videocast<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:*2F*2Fvideocast.nih.gov*2Fwatch*2Fce7cc9ad-9d61-11f1-82c0-124f0a52e769/2/010101a0ed4244b8-e1b6b47d-6a45-4851-a7c3-e3270892c5cb-000000/N_6ORaDR6e6TXwZdtM2WqDKgmkvc6pDRRZfvFJXFfoA=452__;JSUlJQ!!GobTDDpD7A!P2h653g8LIb5rFY7mU3kt9UWRt9pTyaju3cYo4Hl_B1LkqUoypfLUH0QMoXB-Ca2O3cSWlUYE3TZZCxoLo1pXs-moN0$> and archived for future viewing.
