Sent on behalf of Paul Suits, Director, Infection Prevention...

Measles activity is increasing in New York State, including here in Central New York. The New York State Department of Health is currently reporting increased measles activity in the Central, Capital, and Western regions of the state. In Central New York, confirmed cases have been identified in Cayuga, Cortland, and Madison counties, bringing measles activity close to the Syracuse/Onondaga County area. As of September 29, 2026, Onondaga County has not reported a confirmed measles case among county residents.

We want to reassure staff that measles is a vaccine-preventable disease, and the MMR vaccine provides excellent protection. Two appropriately administered doses are approximately 97% effective at preventing measles. Employees with documented evidence of immunity, including appropriate MMR vaccination or laboratory evidence of immunity, are considered protected. Staff should ensure that their vaccination records are current with Employee/Occupational Health.

If measles is suspected, do not place the patient in a general waiting area. Follow established measles screening and isolation procedures and promptly notify Infection Prevention and the appropriate clinical leadership. Guidance for the evaluation and management of patients with suspected measles, as well as patients who have been exposed to measles, is available in the Upstate Measles Clinical Pathway: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://upstate.ellucid.com/pman/documents/view/13686__;!!GobTDDpD7A!K4J-maiHfl7AqJKYsjJU5l7LXm-uzjWYqkK6SCDgvgaNuj9l7UKf-5qb_FM4r7iIjckTCtvFVQCsHlbyA7TbGGIid9sK$ .

Thank you for your continued vigilance and commitment to providing safe, high-quality care to our patients, colleagues, and community.
