DESCRIPTION: New York's Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) Act, effective August 5, 2026, includes a provision with no precedent in any other state MAID law: a mandatory mental health evaluation for every patient requesting MAID, conducted by a psychologist, neurologist, or psychiatrist. At its core, MAID asks medicine to hold two of its foundational values in tension: respect for patient autonomy, and the obligation to protect vulnerable people from harm.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Following this activity, the participants should be able to:
1.  Summarize the key provisions of New York's Medical Aid in Dying Act (PHL Article 28-F), including its August 5, 2026 effective date and its status as the first state MAID law to mandate a mental health evaluation for all patients requesting assistance.
2. Examine why psychiatry has been given a formal role in MAID safeguards in New York.
3. Discuss the arguments for and against MAID, with attention to how each side weighs autonomy, suffering, dignity, and risk of harm.
