New York City Poison Control Center (NYC PCC) Consultants' Conference
December 3, 2020



Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.



The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2020. Grand Rounds will occur from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. EST. The topic and speaker will be:

Cases to be discussed for Consultants' Conference will include:





1.     A 4-month-old boy with a history of congenital heart disease is given an unintentional 10-fold overdose of one of his maintenance medications. The error is recognized immediately, and he is brought to the ED. His vital signs on arrival are: BP, 109/47 mm Hg; HR, 117 beats/minute; RR, 39 breaths/minute; T, 36.9º C; O2 Sat, 100% (RA). He is well-appearing and in no acute distress.





2.     A woman and her husband eat a salad composed primarily of lettuce and what the woman thought was "parsley" from her garden. Approximately one hour later, she and her husband complain of feeling "inebriated." She becomes concerned and calls the regional poison control center (PCC) for advice; a mobile phone plant-identification app by the PCC identifies the "parsley" as a "toxic" plant. The patient and her husband are immediately referred to the emergency department. Upon presentation, their vital signs are all within normal limits.





3.     A 28-year-old woman with no known significant past medical history presents to the ED with witnessed seizure-like activity that occurred at a party. She is found by the Emergency Medical Services to be unresponsive and is given 2mg IM naloxone with a "partial response." Her initial vital signs in the ED are: BP, 135/68 mm Hg; HR, 147 beats/minute; RR, 15 breaths/minute; T, 99.6º F; O2 Sat, 84% (RA).
