Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on Thursday July 1, 2021. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants' Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

"Medicating the Elderly: Determine Benefit, Avoid Toxicity"

Cases to be discussed for Consultants' Conference include:

1.        A 21-month-old boy presents to the ED with lethargy six hours after ingestion of his brother's antipsychotic medication. His vital signs on presentation are: BP, 144/92 mm Hg; HR, 161 beats/minute; RR, 28 breaths/minutes; T, 36.1 degrees C; O2 Sat, 98% (room air); Point of care glucose, 101 mg/dL.

2.        A 25-year-old woman presents to the ED after a medication error that occurred during an attempted elective termination of pregnancy. The error was noticed immediately by the obstetrician/gynecologist after injecting the patient's cervix with what was supposed to be 1% lidocaine. The patient's presenting vital signs are: BP, 107/57 mm Hg; HR, 74 beats/minute; RR, 20 breaths/minute; T, 97.7 degrees F; O2 Sat, 100% (RA). The patient is asymptomatic.

3.        A 41-year-old woman, a 31-year-old man, and a 41-year-old-man all present together to the ED at the same time with vomiting, abdominal cramps, and an abnormal sensation in their throat after eating homemade "tacos" 1.5 hours ago. One of the patients has the following initial vital signs: BP, 81/53 mm Hg; HR, 44 beats/minute; RR, 20 breaths/minute; T, afebrile.
