Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021. Grand Rounds will occur from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. EST. The topic and speaker will be:

“Pharmacodynamics and Clinical Presentations of Amnestic Sexual Assault- Implications for Forensic Investigations”

Cases to be discussed for Consultants’ Conference include:

  1.  A 16-month-old boy with no known significant past medical history presents to the ED with cough and fever after a witnessed exploratory ingestion of an unknown liquid. Five hours after the ingestion, the mother noted that the child was drowsy and warm to touch and the child was brought to the hospital 9 hours after the ingestion. His initial vital signs in the ED are: BP, 100/82 mmHg; HR, 178 beats/minute; RR, 37 breaths/minute; T, 102.8º F; O2 Sat 97% (RA).

  2.  An 18-year-old male with no significant past medical history is in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) following a routine elective surgical procedure when he has two witnessed generalized tonic-clonic seizures within 15 minutes. The second seizure stops after the administration of two different medications used to treat the seizures. His vital signs after seizure cessation are: BP, 175/100 mm Hg; HR, 140 beats/minute; RR, 15 breaths/minute; T, 98.4ºF (temporal).

  3.  A 58-year-old woman with a past medical history of major depression and multiple sclerosis presents to the ED after being found down unresponsive at home surrounded by various pill bottles. She is intubated in the field by EMS for airway protection. Her initial vital signs in the ED are: BP, 120/83 mmHg; HR, 120 beats/minute; RR, 20; T, 36.8ºC; O2 Sat, 100% (intubated). Despite being administered a continuous intravenous infusion of propofol, she continues to seize.
