Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.



The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on Thursday October 7, 2021. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants' Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Cases to be discussed for Consultants' Conference include:





1.        A 16-year-old girl presents to a community hospital after ingesting a mushroom that had been growing in her backyard. She states that she did this because she wanted to "taste" the mushroom. She develops nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain approximately 6 hours after ingestion. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 119/78 mm Hg; HR, 98 beats/minute; RR 18 breaths/minute; T, 36.8 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 100% (RA).  Her initial liver blood tests are: AST, 18 IU/L; ALT 18 IU/L.





2.        A 34-year-old woman presents to the ED four hour after ingesting a product she obtained from the internet in a suicide attempt. She is agitated and diaphoretic; she has multiple episodes of vomiting. Her initial vital signs are: BP, "110 systolic;" HR, 160 beats/minute, RR, 24 breaths/minute; T, 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (rectal), O2 Sat, 99% (RA). Approximately, one hour after presentation, her temperature is noted to increase to 103.3 degrees Fahrenheit (rectal).




3.        A 29-year-old man presents to the ED with odynophagia and dysphagia after ingesting a liquid in a suicide attempt 48 hours ago. After two days in a hospital in his native country, he decides to travel to the United States to seek additional healthcare. His initial vital signs are as follows: BP, 126/92 mm Hg; HR, 95 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 97% (RA).
