Case Presentation

  1.  4 people including a 57 year old female present to the emergency department after someone put muriatic acid in the wrong pool tank at the hotel where they work. The patient complains of shortness of breath and wheezing.

  1.  What is muriatic acid?
  2.  What gasses can be produced with a variety of acids and bases
  3.  How would you empirically treat this patient

  1.  A 21 year old male is splashed in the eye with industrial aircraft carrier general purpose cleaner. The patient is currently complaining of redness in the eye area and burning sensation.
     *   How would you assess to try and obtain product information?
     *   How are acids and bases different as relates to ocular exposures?
     *   How would you further assess and treat this patient?
  2.  A 52 year old female reports taking 2-3 doses of her own medications 2 hours ago in an attempt at self-harm. Her medications include Pradaxa , aspirin, bupropion, hydroxychloroquine, Topomax, Prestique, Linzess and Mirapex
     *   List in order worst to best in terms of toxicity potential
     *   What are the important monitoring parameters for this patient?
