Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on Thursday January 6, 2021. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Legal and Ethical Reporting Responsibilities of Toxicologists

Steven M Marcus, MD

Professor Emeritus

Departments of Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine and Community Health

NJ Medical School

The Rutgers University

Consultants’ Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST.

We will be broadcasting both the Grand Rounds lecture and Consultants’ Conference via the same link on WebEx and there WILL NOT be a live conference at the Public Health Laboratory. A 5-week-old, ex-33-week premature neonate, with known cyanotic congenital heart disease with one functional ventricle, is referred to the ED by his pediatrician after a 10-fold non-prescription medication dosing error over the course of two to three days is discovered. In the ED, he is no acute distress. His vital signs are: BP 72/49 mm Hg; HR 142 beats/minute; RR, 30 breaths/minute; T, 98.4 degrees F; O2 Sat, 80% (RA).

2. A 70-year-old woman with recent subacute headaches presents to the ED from an outpatient MRI suite after having a witnessed generalized tonic clonic seizure. Shortly after on the same day, a 70-year-old male presents from the same MRI suite after having a cardiac arrest. Emergency Medical Services is called and the patient is resuscitated in the field; he has return of spontaneous circulation prior to arriving in the ED approximately 30 minutes later. The patient’s initial vital signs are: BP, 90/50 mm Hg; HR, 51 beats/minute; RR, 20 breaths/minute; T, 37.1 degrees C; O2 Sat, 100% (Intubated, FiO2 100%).

3. A 13-year-old girl presents to the ED complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting after intentionally taking a medication for dysmenorrhea. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 116/60 mmHg; HR, 100 beats/minute; RR, 16 breaths/minute; she is afebrile. Shortly after presentation, her vital signs are retaken; she is noted to have a BP of 90/60 mm Hg and persistent abdominal pain and vomiting.
