Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on June 2, 2022. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Cases to be discussed for Consultants’ Conference include:

1. A 14-year-old girl with no significant past medical history presents to the ED with an intentional overdose of a family member’s medication about two hours prior to arrival. She has one episode of emesis and is complaining of abdominal pain. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 119/85 mmHg; HR, 121 beats/minute; RR, 22 breaths/minute; T, 98 degrees Fahrenheit (oral), O2 Sat, 100% (RA).

2. A 41-year-old woman with no significant past medical history presents to nephrology clinic with swelling in her face and legs for several months. She works as a nurse and uses multiple different types of skin creams. Her vital signs and physical examination are all within normal limits. Urinalysis reveals significant proteinuria. After an extensive work-up, the nephrologist is concerned for toxicologic causes of nephropathy and calls the Poison Control Center for advice.

3. A 37-year-old man who works as a groundskeeper at a golf course presents to the ED with apparent "alcohol intoxication.” The patient has severe agitation and is immediately endotracheally intubated. His initial vital signs are: BP, 127/80; HR, 150 beats minute; RR, 24 breaths/minute; T, 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 100% (intubated). After admission to the ICU, he develops hypotension and his temperature increases to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. The next day, a family member arrives at the hospital with a product from work that they think he ingested.
