Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on December 1, 2022. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants' Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:
Toxin Induced Seizures- Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, & Unrealism
Robert J Hoffman, MD, MS
Deputy Director, Kuwait Poison Center

Consultants' Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST.

We will be broadcasting both the Grand Rounds lecture and Consultants' Conference via the same link on WebEx; the live conference will occur in Public Health Laboratory Auditorium on the ground floor. Cases to be discussed for Consultants' Conference include:

A 4-year-old 16.8 kg female with a past medical history of sickle cell disease is brought to the ED after having a witnessed generalized tonic-clonic seizure. According to her family, the child was having "URI symptoms" for several days prior to the seizure. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 114/62 mm Hg; HR, 127 beats/minute; RR, 20 breaths/minute; T, unknown; O2 Sat, 100% (on 15 l/min via NRB facemask). The Poison Center is called when bedside providers learn that the mother has been utilizing a home remedy for symptomatic relief, and the patient seizes again.

A 4-year-old 15.1kg healthy boy is transferred from an outside hospital to the PICU for 5 days of fever, vomiting and inability to tolerate oral intake. His initial vital signs in the PICU are: BP, 145/85 mmHg; HR, 107 beats/min; RR, 20 breaths/minute; T, 36.8 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 100% (RA). His laboratory tests are significant for: AST, 3634 U/L; ALT, > 7500 U/L; INR, 3.61; total bilirubin, 1.5 mg/dL. The poison center is consulted for possible acetaminophen toxicity.

A 67-year-old man with a past medical history of schizophrenia, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus presents to the ED complaining of chest pain. On arrival to the ED, he admits to the hospital staff that he took "too much" of one of his medications. His vital signs are: BP, 124/84 mm/Hg; HR 144 beats/minute; RR 36 breaths/min; T, 101 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat 100% RA. His providers feel that he is agitated but are uncertain if he has altered mental status.
