Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on April 6, 2023. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Social Media as a Medium for Toxicology Research,
Surveillance, and Outreach

Joshua Bloom, MD, PhD
Senior Fellow in Medical Toxicology
The Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine
NYU Grossman School of Medicine

Consultants’ Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST.

The live conference will be held in the Public Health Laboratory and we will also broadcast via WebEx. Cases to be discussed for Consultants’ Conference include:

1. A 16-year-old healthy girl is brought to the ED by her mother for "not appearing well." The mother reports that three days prior to presentation, the patient had nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for one day. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 123/77 mm Hg; HR, 63 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 99.0 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 99% (RA). During the diagnostic evaluation of the patient, she is found to have an acute kidney injury (AKI); additional history reveals an intentional overdose three days ago.

2. A 16-year-old healthy girl presents to the ED after a reported intentional ingestion of antifreeze 45 minutes prior to arrival. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 114/66 mm Hg; HR, 108 beats/minute; RR, 14 breaths/minute; T, 98.5 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 99% (room air). She is asymptomatic and her physical examination is unremarkable. Her initial laboratory findings are significant for: pH 7.43, PCO2 35; serum osmolality 282 mOsm/kg; ethanol undetectable; and osmolal gap of -10.6 mOsm/kg. The Poison Center is called for assistance.

3. A 78-year-old woman with a past medical history of metastatic breast cancer, hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and deep vein thromboses is admitted to the hospital for “shortness of breath.” During the admission, she has multiple episodes of bradycardia and brief asystole which spontaneously resolve without intervention. The medical team is concerned for an adverse drug effect and calls the PCC. Her vital signs at the time of consultation are: BP, 124/61 mmHg; HR, 80 beats/minute; RR, 23 breaths/minute; T, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 98%.
