Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on October 5, 2023. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Culture Matters in the World of Medicine

Paromita Hore, PhD, MPH

Director, Environmental Exposure Assessment and Education

Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Consultants’ Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST.

The live conference will be held in the Public Health Laboratory and we will also broadcast via WebEx. Cases to be discussed for Consultants’ Conference include:

1. A 2-year-old girl with no significant past medical history who is on a canoe trip with her family presents to the ED with worsening pain and swelling to her right ankle immediately after being bitten by a snake two hours ago. Her vital signs on ED presentation are: BP, 110/62 mm/Hg; HR, 98 beats/minute; RR, 16 breaths/min; T, 98.8 degrees Fahrenheit; O2Sat 100% RA. She is noted to have swelling from her right ankle up to her right knee.

2. A 37-year-old woman with a history of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is undergoing a hip procedure at an orthopedic hospital. As the surgeons are closing the incision, she suddenly develops an “unstable” tachyarrhythmia; her Laryngeal Mask Airway is exchanged with an endotracheal tube for airway protection. She is immediately transported to the ED of an outside hospital. On arrival to the ED, her initial vitals are: BP, 114/80 mm Hg; HR, 81 beats/minute; RR, intubated; T, 36.8 degrees Celsius.

3. A 63-year-old man, a 48-year-old man, and a 31-year-old man are celebrating New Year's Eve with shots of tequila at the stroke of midnight. Within minutes, all three become obtunded and are brought to the Emergency Department. All of the patients have similar vital signs, described as: BP, 100s/50s mm Hg; HR, 35-50 beats/minute; RR, 15-17 breaths/minute; T, Normothermic; O2 Sat, 95% (Room Air). The Poison Center is called for assistance.
