Consultants' Conference

Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on August 1, 2024. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Cases to be discussed for Consultants’ Conference include:

1. A 3-year-old girl is administered a medication by her aunt in anticipation of a prolonged car ride. Shortly after receiving the medication, the child has a few episodes of emesis. Five hours later when the mother returns home, she notices that the child “doesn’t look right” and brings the child to the ED. Her vital signs on arrival are: BP, 85/39 mmHg; HR, 151 beats/minute; RR, 28 breaths/minute; T, 97.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. A 46-year-old woman with a past medical history of schizoaffective disorder, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and iron-deficiency anemia is hospitalized and started on a new medication. Two weeks later, she develops fever, tachycardia and hypotension. Her vital signs at this time are noted to be: BP, 73/53 mm Hg; HR, 131 beats/minute; RR, 33 breaths/minute; T, 96.6 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 88% (Room Air). Her ECG shows sinus tachycardia, rate 132 beats/minute; QRS duration, 90 msec; QT duration, 272 msec.

3. A 59-year-old woman presents to the ED after a suspected insect bite to her posterior right shoulder that occurred five days ago while traveling in Texas. After the “bite” occurred, she reports pain and a wound that is increasing in size at the site of the "bite" accompanied by nausea, malaise, and fevers. Her vital signs on arrival are: BP, 103/57 mmHg; HR, 119 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 99.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
