Case discussion

Case #1: The emergency department calls regarding a 58 year old female who is Korean speaking and known to forage for mushrooms. She has a one day history of nausea and vomiting. (it is early October)
      Questions:
            1. What are the important mushrooms to know with regard to toxicity?
            2. What is useful in the differentiation of the “more vs less” toxic mushrooms?
            3. Would you consider any laboratory studies important? Which ones?
4. Would you consider any empiric therapy? Why
Case #2: A 51 year old female arrives to the ED awake, but progressively declines in mental status and is at the time of the call not responding to painful stimuli.
            1. What do you want to know?
            2. How would you go about determining a differential in the patient?
Case #3: A 36 year old female reports taking a dose of cough medication and then having ataxia, and is “shaky and wobbly”
            1. What do you want to know?
            2. How would you go about determining a differential in the patient?
(please also read about any toxins involved)
