                  New York City Poison Center Consultants' Conference
AUGUST 2025
Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are largely presented by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on August 7, 2025. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Select cases that will be discussed include:

  1.  A 38-year-old man with no known significant past medical history presents to the ED after ingesting 100 tablets of his mother's medication approximately two hours prior to presentation. His initial vital signs are: BP, 145/104 mm Hg; HR, 70 beats/min; RR, 24 breaths/minute; T, 36.6 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 100%. At this time, an initial venous blood gas shows: pH, 7.25; PCO2, 46 mmHg; PO2, 35 mmHg; lactate, 7 mmol/L. The patient initially has a normal mental status and is asymptomatic; however, he becomes somnolent overnight and requires intubation. Toxicology is called for consultation. His venous blood gas now shows: pH < 6.93; PCO2, 59.9 mmHg; PO2, 130 mmHg; lactate, >29 mmol/L.

  1.  A 38-year-old woman with opioid use disorder is admitted to the ICU with a diagnosis of opioid withdrawal syndrome complicated by respiratory failure. An official echocardiogram is performed and it shows that she has an ejection fraction of 10%. Shortly after the echocardiogram is performed, she receives a supportive medication and develops PEA cardiac arrest.

  1.  An 81-year-old woman with a past medical history of vitamin B12 deficiency and osteoarthritis presents to the ED for psychiatric evaluation for paranoid behavior and delusions. The neighbors report that they have smelled a strong odor of a household product emanating from her home for the past year. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 108/60 mm Hg; HR, 65 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 97.2 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 100% (Room Air).

2) Follow the yellow pathway to the stairs as shown in the map and head down to the Ground Floor.

1) Enter through the Main Lobby Entrance (550 1st Avenue) and check in to receive a visitor pass.
2) Exit the Main Lobby and head south to 30th Street.
3) Enter through 30th Street entrance. Schwartz lecture hall will be to your left.
