                              New York City Poison Center Consultants' Conference
DECEMBER 2025
Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are largely presented by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on December 4, 2025. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speakers will be:

Select cases that will be discussed include:

  1.  A 68-year-old man with no known past medical history is caring for his chickens when he is bitten by a snake on his right index finger. He self presents to an urgent care center who then decides to transfer the patient to the Emergency Department. During transfer, he develops hoarseness and oropharyngeal edema; he is treated with intravenous epinephrine and corticosteroids and is immediately intubated upon arrival to the ED. At the time of consultation, his vital signs are: BP, 106/78 mm Hg; HR, 85 beats/min; RR, 16 breaths/minute; T, 36.9 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 100% (FiO2, 100%).

  1.  A 27-year-old woman presents to the ED with altered mental status after being found surrounded by emesis containing “white pills.” Her last known well was two hours prior to arrival. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 124/100 mm Hg; HR, 105 beats/minute; RR, 19 breaths/minute; T, 94.6 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 100% (Room Air). Her laboratory tests are significant for [APAP], 863 mcg/mL; VBG, pH 7.31; lactate, 13.1mmol/L; other labs include: Cr, 0.72 mg/dL; AST, 21 U/L, ALT, 19 U/L; INR 1.0.

  1.  A 30-year-old woman with a complex past medical history that includes severe spasticity, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis presents to the hospital with apparent sepsis. While being hospitalized for management of the infection, the patient progressively develops worsening kidney function and altered mental status over several days. Toxicology is called for assistance with further management on day 4 of hospitalization. Her vital signs at the time of consultation are: BP, 114/81 mm Hg; HR, 70 beats/minute; RR, 14 breaths/minute; T, 36.3 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 97% (Room Air).
