New York City Poison Center Consultants' Conference
JUNE 2025
Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants’ Conference will be held on June 5, 2025. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants’ Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

My Passion for Veterinary Toxicology – Not Just My Pet Project

Jason Dietz, MD
Senior Fellow in Medical Toxicology
New York City Poison Control Center
NYU Grossman School of Medicine

Consultants’ Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST.

The live conference will be held on the NYU Campus in Medical Science Building; Schwartz Ground Floor; SLH E room; we will also broadcast via WebEx. Select cases that will be discussed include:

1. A 45-year-old man with no known past medical history is found unresponsive on the sidewalk. He has no improvement in mental status after 16 mg intranasal naloxone administered by bystanders and is brought to the ED via ambulance. His vital signs on presentation to the hospital are noted to be: BP, 152/104 mm Hg; HR, 36 beats/minute; RR, 16 breaths/minute; T, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 99% (Room Air). Over the next three hours, four additional patients are brought to the same ED with a similar presentation.

2. A 31-year-old woman with no significant past medical history is brought to the hospital from an unlicensed clinic in cardiac arrest after having an unknown procedure. Return of spontaneous circulation is achieved after one hour of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and administration of multiple medications. Her vital signs obtained after ROSC are noted to be: BP, 137/93 mm Hg; HR, 105 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 97.2 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 100% (Intubated, FiO2 40%).

3. A 4-day-old boy, ex-40 weeks 3 days, is born via C-section with decreased tone and no cry. On day of life 2, he is observed to be tremulous and irritable. A presumed diagnosis is entertained and, he is erroneously ordered and given 10 times the standard dosage of a medication for 24 hours. During this time, he is noted to have episodes of bradycardia and oxygen desaturation to 80%. These episodes resolve with manual stimulation. Vital signs at the time of consultation are: BP, 64/35 mm Hg; HR, 98 beats/min; T, 36.9C; RR 23 breaths/minute; T, 36.9 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 99% (4L/min supplemental oxygen).
