New York City Poison Center Consultants' Conference MAY 2026 Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are largely presented by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse. The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants? Conference will be held on May 7, 2026. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants? Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be: Climate Crisis: A Toxic Landscape Barbara Sahag?n, MD Senior Fellow in Toxicology NYU Grossman School of Medicine/New York City Poison Center Consultants? Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST. The live conference will be held on the NYU Campus in the Medical Science Building Schwartz Lecture Hall located on the Ground Floor; the conference will also be broadcasted via Zoom. Select cases that will be discussed include: 1. A 14-month-old healthy boy is at a family barbecue when he is witnessed becoming ?stiff? and turning purple for approximately 5-10 minutes. Emergency Medical Services is called and administers supplemental oxygen on scene. The patient is transported to the ED and he remains unresponsive. His initial vital signs are: BP: 132/67, HR: 168, Temp: 97 degrees Fahrenheit, O2 Sat, 100% (FiO2, 100% via non-rebreather facemask). In the ED, he has a witnessed generalized tonic-clonic seizure that lasts continuously for 5-10 minutes; he is administered IM midazolam and gets endotracheally intubated. 2. A 3-week-old girl with congenital heart disease who was born at 37 weeks 6 days gestation receives a 10-fold dose of her scheduled medication in a medication error. Her vital signs after the medication error is identified are: BP, 74/32 mmHg; HR, 168 beats/minute; RR, 45 breaths/minute, T, 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Saturation, 92% (room air). 3. A 40-year-old woman presents to the ED with a chief complaint of ?vaginal bleeding.? Her initial vital signs are: BP, 132/81 mm Hg; HR, 87 beats per min; RR, 15 breaths per min; T, 36.9 degrees Celsius; O2 Saturation, 99% (room air). She is incidentally found to have a carboxyhemoglobin of 19.7% on a routine venous blood gas; toxicology is called for consultation. Mark K.
