New York City Poison Center Consultants' Conference

  FEBRUARY 2025

Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.



The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on February 6, 2025. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants' Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Select cases to be discussed for include:


1.    A 9-year-old girl with who is currently being treated for a "parasitic infection" presents to the Emergency Department with cyanosis. According to the child's mother, the patient had two episodes of vomiting at home and shortly thereafter, appeared blue, prompting her to call EMS. In the ED, the patient is noted to have perioral cyanosis but no other symptoms. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 121/58 mm Hg; HR, 110 beats/minute; RR, 22 breaths/minute; T, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (Oral); O2 Sat, 88% (with supplemental oxygen at 15L/min via non-rebreather face mask).



2.    A 68-year-old woman with a past medical history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus presents to the Emergency Department after falling down at home. She endorses feeling weak for the past week as well as worsening right flank and lower back pain. Her initial vital signs are: BP, 102/70 mm Hg; HR, 107 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 103.5 degrees Fahrenheit (Rectal); O2 Sat, 98% (Room Air).



3.    A 45-year-old woman with a past medical history of an unusual "nerve tumor" presents to the ED for myoclonic jerks of her upper extremities along with mild lethargy and confusion. These symptoms occurred shortly after receiving an intravenous treatment for her malignancy. Her vital signs on arrival are: BP, 162/96 mmHg; HR, 103 beats/minute; RR, 20 breaths/minute; T, 101.3 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 98% (Room Air).
