[UndocTaskForce] Follow-Up from 1/17 Meeting (includes action items)

Hello Undocumented Task Force members,

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend our meeting last week. This is a challenging time for students whose immigration status is precarious, and I appreciate the support and solidarity of the members of this Task Force as we work to build a safer Upstate for our students.

I want to highlight a few action items moving forward:


  1.  Priorities/Scheduling Survey: as the Task Force kicks into high gear to address the challenges, new and old, now facing our students, we will need to identify goals and priority areas in which to focus our efforts. I created this survey<https://redcap.upstate.edu/surveys/?s=CMD3JAXCKPPCN7DD> to gauge the priorities of our members – please take the survey, and if you feel comfortable doing so, please identify if you are a student member. Additionally, the survey will ask you to indicate the best times for you to have a standing meeting once per month. I do not think it is likely that we will find a time that works for everyone, but I hope we can accommodate most people and that, once the meeting is scheduled on a repeating basis, Task Force members can aim to schedule around it.

Please also forward this survey to any other students you feel may be interested in providing their views on what the Task Force should be addressing in the short term.



  1.  Working Groups: In order to keep the Task Force nimble, it will likely be necessary to organize working groups around the issues we identify as priorities. If you might be willing to serve as a leader of a working group, please let me know (these will be based on the priorities in the survey, so let me know if one in particular stands out to you as something you would like to focus on).


  1.  Identification of New Members: While the current membership of our Task Force represents many areas of the university (faculty, students, student affairs, financial aid), we will need more people at the table who have a stake in the systems we are looking to build to support our students. Please let me know who else you think we should invite to the table. I feel confident we will need representation from campus safety, and there are likely other areas that should be engaged in this process as well (IT? Registrar? Etc.). Additionally, if you know of any students who have a stake in the work that we are doing, please feel free to connect them with me, or forward this email to them as an invitation to join our work.



  1.  Email Badges: I am attaching the image that you can add to your email signature to indicate that you are an ally of our undocumented students. If you feel comfortable doing so, I would encourage faculty and staff to add this badge to your email signature.
