Good afternoon, I have drafted a letter that I would like to send to Dr. Joe Stahlman this week, to invite him to speak at UNYOC'24. I appreciate your assistance with this! Best, Lorraine [cid:image001.png at 01DA94BA.0164EBB0] Dear Dr. Stahlman, I am writing to you today in my capacity as Chair of the Conference Planning Committee for the Upstate New York and Ontario Chapter of the Medical Library Association (UNYOC/MLA). I found your name while researching leaders within the Seneca Nation who might be interested in speaking at our annual conference. Given your role as Director of the Seneca Nation's Tribal Historic Preservation Office, and librarians' interest and expertise in preservation, I hope that you will agree that this seems like a natural fit. Founded in 1964, UNYOC is celebrating 60 years as the region's professional home for hospital and academic health sciences librarians. Our purpose is to serve the professional interests and needs of New York and Ontario librarians. We do this, in part, by holding an annual conference in October. The next UNYOC Annual Meeting is scheduled to take place in Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Celeron, NY from Wednesday, October 23 to Friday, October 25. Based on my own opinions about social justice, and discussions with colleagues within our membership, this year UNYOC conference program committee members have made it a goal to reach beyond a Land Recognition statement. The purpose of setting this goal is to move beyond performative activism, to embrace humility and self-reflection, and ultimately educate ourselves in a meaningful way about the communities whom we acknowledge. Indigenous people, also known as First Nations people to our Canadian members, deserve more than a single statement that asks nothing of the people who hear it. To my way of thinking, the best way to achieve our goal is to hear directly from a member of the Seneca Nation by inviting someone to deliver a keynote address at this year's conference. My hope is that, by setting this precedent, conference planners who come after me will continue to prioritize this kind of content for our members. I cordially invite you to address UNYOC members for 60 mins (including Q&A) as a keynote speaker. Depending on your interest and availability, you can choose to speak between Wednesday evening and Friday afternoon. This is a small conference that generally attracts between 35 and 60 delegates from most corners of New York State and Southern Ontario province in Canada. Although we have a limited budget, we will provide you a stipend of $1000 US. Should you choose to stay overnight at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel, we can ensure that you receive the discounted room rate. If it suits your schedule, you are also invited to join us on Wednesday evening for our conference welcome reception or for our conference banquet on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Kindly provide a response by Friday, May 3, 2024. If you would like to discuss this in detail, feel free to respond to me at this email or call my cell phone: (585) 880-8895.
