[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - C. diff testing change

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing. In an attempt to keep us all on the same page, the Laboratory Formulary Committee will be regularly sending out emails with recent updates and guidances. Below are the short versions of relevant changes. A more in-depth resource about the changes is available through the link in the description below.


Update to C. diff testing: The test Clostridium Difficile Toxin (Epic order LAB253) for Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile is being replaced with C. difficile PCR (Epic order LAB9296) on November 2, 2021.  This order has been updated to include applicable indications and contraindications (at least 3 loose stools in the prior 24 hours AND the patient must not have been on a bowel regimen including stool softeners within 48 hours).  Inappropriate use of this testing can result in unnecessary isolation precautions and exposure to medications, as well as straining hospital resources and staffing.  With this guidance in the order, this testing will be a Tier 1 rather than Tier 2.
