[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - CMV, congenital CMV, and HCV testing change

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.


Beginning 8/16/2023, the UH Microbiology laboratory will perform the following in-house:
1. Qualitative Cytomegalovirus (CMV) PCR of saliva swabs or urine samples from patients less than 21 days old. Congenital CMV PCR - LAB9838 replaces CMV Saliva Real-Time PCR (Sendout) - LAB9113 and CMV Quant DNA PCR Urine - LAB8952.
2. Quantitative Hepatitis C virus (HCV) PCR of serum or EDTA plasma specimens for patients with reactive HCV serology or known infection. HCV Quant PCR - LAB9842 will replace Hepatitis C RNA, quantitative, PCR (aka HCV) - LAB887. Specimens that test positive for HCV antibody will be automatically reflexed to HCV Quant PCR.
3. Quantitative Cytomegalovirus (CMV) PCR of EDTA plasma specimens. CMV Quant PCR, Plasma - LAB9843 will replace CMV DNA, quantitative, PCR - LAB913.
