Med student Elsa Diaw, currently on a research gap year at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, wanted to share this information with you:

For anyone who may be interested in this opportunity,

The Mayo Clinic Orthopedic Surgery Research Gap Year Program is a paid, 12-month clinical research fellowship for rising second- and third-year U.S. medical students interested in orthopedic surgery. Fellows work with faculty mentors in one of six subspecialties, Foot & Ankle, Hip & Knee, Pediatrics, Shoulder & Elbow, Sports Medicine, or Trauma, and third-year students complete a one-month orthopedic clerkship at the end of the year.

The program includes a $20,000 stipend, with the option to apply for additional funding through a competitive NIH T32 training grant. Weekly didactic sessions cover research methods, leadership development, mentorship for the residency match, and fundamental surgical skills.

A single-application match process streamlines placement across all six divisions. The program has a strong track record of high research productivity and successful orthopedic surgery residency matches.

Application window: Nov. 3-Dec. 19, 2025

Required materials: CV, two recommendation letters, personal statement, USMLE Step 1 (if applicable), and transcript. Visa sponsorship is not available.
