Hi All,

Sharing some updates


  1.  Spring is only 13 days away and our first sunset after 7Pm will be in 5 days! (Don't forget to change your clocks Mar 12th at 0200)



  1.  We had a great kick off to our Magnet redesignation and nursing excellence assessment tool (NEAT) process with our consultant Tipton. Magnet activity and work is ramping up and our clock for application and then submission starts in January 2024!



  1.  PG Staff Satisfaction survey results
     *   I will be sharing results and info at my next CNO open forum on April 5th at 0900 (on zoom)
     *   We DID outperform in 3 out of our 4 identified RN engagement categories as required for Magnet.
     *   We outperformed on overall engagement
     *   We underperformed in Resilience. The Resilience index is divided into two themes:

                                                               i.      Activation items focus on finding meaning in the work and focusing on patients/clients as individuals.

                                                             ii.      Decompression items focus on employees' ability to disconnect from work.

     *   We outperformed in the following:

                                                               i.      Adequacy of staffing resources

                                                             ii.      Leadership Access & Responsiveness

                                                           iii.      Professional development

     *   We missed outperforming the mean in the following:

                                                               i.      Autonomy

                                                             ii.      Fundamentals of Quality Nursing Care

                                                           iii.      Interprofessional Relationships

                                                           iv.      RN to RN Teamwork & Collaboration

     *   The Nursing department as a whole will have 1 action plan focusing on Adequacy of Staffing resources
     *   All managers have access to their unit specific results in the PG website and will be sharing this info with staff this month
     *   All areas with unit specific surveys ( 5 or more responses) will complete a unit specific action plan



  1.  Staffing Updates
     *   Retention continues to improve

                                                               i.      For calendar year 2022

           *   UH RN turnover has dropped from  32.7 % to 22.8%
           *   CH RN turnover has dropped from 33.7% to 19%
           *   The national RN turnover rate is 27.1%
           *   HCT/UST Turnover have dropped from 37.9% to 33.6%
           *   RN vacancy rate for the department has dropped form 40.7% (July 2022) to 31.6% (Feb 2023)
     *   We have a net gain of  12 RNs starting in January and have 47 RN/GNs hired not started - most pending Spring 2023 graduation
     *   We continue to explore options for recruiting international nurses and developing some virtual nursing to support the bedside staff with admissions, teaching, clinical advice on demand, patient/family interaction and other activities
     *   We continue to work with Civil Service in Albany on a pay package proposal for CSEA staff. Hoping to be able to share details soon
     *   We are working on UUP salary adjustments to address any compression issues related to the PEF RN grade change



  1.  Budget Season
     *   Our FY (fiscal year) runs July 1st to June 30th so the current FY 23 ends June 30th
     *   FY 24 budget prep is well underway and we will begin working on our staffing plans and workload panner soon



  1.  Nursing Department Updates:
     *   Rochelle Ratliff, MS RN  as our new Associate Director of Nursing for Pediatrics. Rochelle started her career at Upstate in 1995 as an adult Hematology/Oncology nurse before moving to Maryland to get her Master's degree.  Before returning to Upstate in 2010, Rochelle worked as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Howard Community College in Maryland and as Shift Coordinator in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC prior to becoming the Nurse Manager of their Pediatric Hematology/Oncology outpatient clinic. When she returned to Upstate, she worked on 11G, (Pediatric Hematology/Oncology) as a clinical leader before becoming the Nurse Manager at Upstate Pediatrics, one of Upstate Golisano's Pediatric primary care clinics, where she's been for 10 years



     *   Sarah Schroeder BSN, CPN has joined  team Upstate from Arizona as the new 3N Pre/Post Nurse Manager. Sarah has been a registered nurse for 15 years and eight years as a Pediatric PACU nurse. The last 5 years she discovered her passion as a supervisor for the Pre-op/PACU at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Sarah has a great knowledge base of the perioperative setting and patient care and we are excited for her joining our Upstate team.



     *   Chris DonGilli as the new Nurse Manager of the Pediatric Emergency Department. Chris brings more than 30 years of nursing experience. Most of her nursing career was spent at University of Pittsburg Medical Center Children's Hospital. At UPMC, she served in various roles including nursing assistant, staff RN, PICU Nurse Manager, and PICU unit Director. Additionally, she worked as a nursing supervisor and Forensic Nurse Examiner for adult and pediatric sexual assault victims. Since February 2022, Chris has served as the Assistant Nurse Manager in the Pediatric Emergency Department here at Upstate.


     *   Melissia Wheeler MSN, NP-C, NEA-BC has been appointed as the new Associate Director of Nursing for Advanced Practice Services. Melissia joined Upstate in March of 2018 as a Talent Acquisition Specialist before accepting the role of Assistant Director of Advanced Practice in 2019.   While serving as the Assistant Director she attained her NEA-BC and completed the Cornell Executive Healthcare Leadership program.  Most recently Melissia has been filling this role on an Interim basis. Prior to joining Upstate her healthcare career has spanned across 30 + year serving as a CNA, LPN, RN, and NP.  For 20 years of this time, she held progressively advancing healthcare leadership roles serving ultimately serving as the Executive Director in CNY & the Southern Tier home healthcare community.  In addition, she has served has a clinical instructor at CCC for several years and as a professor at Lemoyne.



     *   Emery House, MSN, RN, CCRN, CMSRN, has accepted the position of Evidence-Based Practice Nurse Research Program Manager beginning February 2, 2023.  This new position is part of the Nursing Practice Excellence Team and will work closely with the Nurse Scientist to support nurses at all levels in evidence-based practice and nursing research.  Emery is joining the team following six years in the ICU support pool and three years on 6A/7U at the Downtown Campus. She is a graduate of Cayuga Community College (2013) and Keuka College BSN (2016) MSN (2018). She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Education through St. John Fisher University where she discovered her passion for research and evidence-based practice. Throughout her journey at Upstate she has been involved with shared governance councils such as professional development, nursing excellence, nursing congress, and Magnet.  She is currently the chair of Nursing Congress.



     *   James Cavalluzzi BSN, RN, CNOR has accepted the Nurse Manager position for Pre-Admission Testing.  He will be supervising the Community and Downtown campus's as they combine into one unit in their new location on the first floor of UHCC, later this summer.  James started his Upstate career in 2000, after graduating with his bachelor's in Nursing from Syracuse University.  He has worked on both the Burn Unit and Orthopedics, in addition to his time in the OR.  James has been a preceptor, a clinical leader, an assistant nurse manager and for the last 4 years has been managing the 5E OR.



     *   Kerrigan Lindsay MSN, CNE is our new Professional Development Program Manager.  Kerrigan, graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing from SUNY IT in 2004, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing  from Syracuse University in 2001.  She holds multiple professional certifications that include; Certified Nurse Educator, Certified Pediatric Nurse, Certified Lactation Consultant, and Neonatal Resuscitation Provider. Kerrigan, brings with her an abundance of leadership and educational experience to include previous experience as the nurse manager of 12E Pediatrics, Pediatric SWAT Nurse at the Family Birth Center, Clinical Nurse Instructor,  and years of experience as a clinical nurse.

     *   Hospitalists Day was March 2nd - please see the attached picture of the nice event held for this incredible group of providers!
     *   Certified Nurses day is March 19th
     *   Doctor's Day  is March 30th
     *   Nurses week is May 6th - May 12th
     *   Hospital week is May 7th to May 13th
