Message for Nursing: New Formulation of Nitroglycerin Infusion Bottles
We are currently experiencing a widespread shortage of nitroglycerin 100mg/250mL infusion bottles. This is our standard formulation for most nitroglycerin infusions.
Our only current alternative option is to utilize a 50mg/250mL infusion bottle in place of the 100mg/250mL bottles.
As such, beginning next week, Pharmacy at the Downtown Campus will be replacing all Nitroglycerin 100mg/250mL bottles with 50mg/250mL bottles in Pyxis. This change is currently NOT affecting the Community Campus.
Things will be set in EPIC so that this new formulation is selected, and dosing will be the same. The infusion pumps will be configured to provide the correct dose based upon this new concentration.
What will be different:
* Nurses will see a new concentration of nitroglycerin infusion bottles loaded to Pyxis (50mg/250ml)
* Alaris will be configured at the new infusion rate to provide the correct ordered dose
What will be the same:
* Nitroglycerin will be ordered the same
* Alaris will import the dose and infuse at the correct rate to provide the correct dose. The nurse will not need to make manual changes to the infusion pump. Nurse practice should largely remain the same.
* The nitroglycerin bottles will remain available in same locations and be available on Pyxis override per policy.
* The 0.1mg/mL concentration used predominantly in the Heart and Vascular Center is not affected and with continue to be available
A Pyxis alert will be set up to let the nurse know about the new formulation when it is removed from Pyxis.
Any additional questions, always feel free to contact pharmacy.
