Alert: Scam targeting nurses circulating in our area
Jan. 30

The New York State Board of Nursing has issued an official alert regarding a vishing scam targeting licensees. Vishing scams use phone calls or voice messages to trick victims into providing sensitive information.

Scammers have made several calls to nursing units at Upstate impersonating State Education Department employees or websites to steal personal and licensure data by claiming nurses have disciplinary infractions.

If you remain on the call, they will eventually ask for banking or credit card information to "resolve" these issues.

These scammers often use spoofing technology to make it appear as though they are calling from a legitimate office.

The state board confirms they conduct all official business via sealed and certified mail.

The state board would only contact an employer as a last resort if a licensee were actively avoiding an investigator after receiving certified mail.

University Police is investigating.

If you receive a call like this:

  * Do not provide any banking or payment information.
  *   Hang up the call.
  * Report the call by emailing UPD Investigator Thompson at ThompsCh at Upstate.edu<mailto:ThompsCh at Upstate.edu> or call 315-464-4000.
