DESCRIPTION: Situational stresses interact with personality patterns, presenting clinicians with complicated combinations of grief, mourning, and depressive and self-defeating (also called masochistic) dynamics. Because neither “Depressive Personality Disorder” nor “Self-Defeating Personality Disorder” is included in the DSM or ICD, official taxonomies offer little help to therapists in distinguishing between various painful self-states and framing psychotherapy accordingly. Dr. McWilliams will differentiate conceptually between depression and mourning, between anaclitic and introjective depression, and between depressive and self-defeating personality patterns, emphasizing the therapeutic implications of such distinctions.



LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Following this activity, the participants should be able to:

1. Differentiate normal sadness and grief from clinical depression.

2. Distinguish between depressive and self-defeating personality styles and disorders.

3. Articulate two clinical implications of these distinction.
