Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.



The next NYC PCC Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on Thursday August 5, 2021. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants' Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:

Cases to be discussed for Consultants' Conference include:





1.        A previously healthy toddler is found with one tablet of his mother's medication in his mouth and the mother is currently pregnant. He presents to the ED with multiple episodes of emesis and altered mental status. His initial vital signs are: BP, not performed; HR, 168 beats/min; RR, 36 breaths/min; T 36 degrees C, O2 Sat, 100% (RA).

2.        A 48-year-old man presents to the ED with a complaint of difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, and trouble ambulating. His vital signs are: BP, 153/77 mm Hg; HR 69 beats/minute; RR, 18 breaths/minute; T, 98.2 degrees F; O2 Sat, 100% (RA). The patient's mother presented shortly afterwards with similar symptoms.

3.        A 38-year-old woman is "found down" and lethargic by EMS in the morning after a presumed overdose the night before. During transport to the hospital, the woman is administered treatment and her mental status returns to baseline. Her initial vital signs in the ED are: BP, 110/90 mm Hg: HR, 115 beats/minute; RR, 19 breaths/minute; T, 99.1 degrees F; O2 Sat, 99% (RA); Point of care glucose, 51 mg/dL. In the ED, the patient is believed to have a new neurologic deficit and is admitted to the hospital for evaluation of an acute stroke.
