Consultants' Conference is a monthly meeting attended by medical toxicologists, emergency physicians, pharmacists and other learners from all over the Northeast. It is an educational activity in which the Consultants (renowned experts in various medical specialties) provide insight into the analysis and approach to the diagnosis and treatment of interesting toxicologic cases. The cases are presented mostly by the NYU Toxicology fellows in training, but anyone can present their case if deemed appropriate. Learners of all levels can benefit from the rich and often dynamic discourse.

The next NYC Poison Center Grand Rounds and Consultants' Conference will be held on August 3, 2023. Grand Rounds will start at 1PM EST and Consultants' Conference will follow immediately. The topic and speaker will be:
The Alphabet Soup of Regulatory Toxicology
Michael Holland, MD
Medical Toxicologist, Upstate NY Poison Center
Medical Director, Saratoga Hospital Employee Health Services
and SHMG Occupational Medicine
Consultants' Conference will take place from 2 PM - 4 PM EST.

The live conference will be held in the Public Health Laboratory and we will also broadcast via WebEx. Cases to be discussed for Consultants' Conference include:

1. A two-year-old healthy girl presents to the ED with irritability and difficulty breathing that progressively worsens over 12 hours. She does not take any medications nor are there any prescription medications in the household. Her vital signs on presentation are as follows: BP, 124/palp; HR, 190 beats/minute; RR, 24 breaths/minutes; T, 36.5 degrees Celsius; O2 Sat, 87% (RA). She is noted to be cyanotic on physical examination.

2. A 19-year-old man is found down in jail after reportedly ingesting 40 "unknown" pills. First responders administer 4mg naloxone IN without response, after which a capillary glucose is obtained that reads "LO." The patient receives 45g of IV glucose by EMS and has an improved mental status. His initial vital signs on presentation to the ED are: BP, 104/59 mm Hg; HR, 63 beats/minute; RR, 16 breaths/minute; T, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit; O2 Sat, 100% (RA).

3. A 37-year-old woman with a past medical history of bronchial asthma is prescribed a new medication at an "aesthetic clinic" she attends. She develops nausea and multiple episodes of vomiting and diarrhea after taking only one dose. The next day she presents to health care; initial vital signs are: BP, 80/40 mm Hg; HR, 120 beats/minute; RR, "normal;" T, "afebrile."
