I agree!
I feel like over the past 20+ years - I continue to hear similar salary stories. It certainly fires up my advocacy.

My previous university provided women faculty regular training. One of the trainings included research on how men and women negotiate salaries differently - was actually quite interesting.  They reviewed strategies on how to improve women’s salary negotiation skills.  Fast forward years later... not related - they hired an independent consultant to assess the pay gap ... pay gap didn't change and in some cases got worse.....

later in life it occurred to me - training wasn't going to change culture.... if the training had a chance it needed to be bi-directional to address the pay gap (behavior of negotiation between two people) and needed a level of HR/leadership accountability.  (Of course when you have an opportunity to negotiate)

It’s important to have a work place that has strategies in place for attaining pay equity, a way to track progress, and a mechanism for addressing concerns when they arise.   Let’s not endure these discouraging experiences alone. Thank you Vicki and Sylvie for your advocacy!

I was told “ Your husband ( a surgeon) has a good salary, why are you worried?”
Admittedly that was in the 70’s!
I was outraged, which I think is one of the things that spurred me on to try to do what I could for parity etc at Upstate!

The chair failed to consider that the male radiologist was married to a plastic surgeon.  It will not change until the people in charge are predominantly women because men will always want to make more.
