[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - COVID antibody testing, blood gas normal ranges

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing. In an attempt to keep us all on the same page, the Laboratory Formulary Committee will be regularly sending out emails with recent updates and guidances. Below are the short versions of relevant changes. More in-depth resources about the changes are attached.


Change to SARS-CoV-2 antibody assay: In-house testing for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID) will change from the current assay (COVID-19 IgG Ab; Epic Code LAB9246) which detects antibodies to the nuclear capsid to an assay detecting antibodies to the spike protein (COVID Spike Total Ab; Epic Code LAB9340).  This assay will measure total antibodies (including IgG and IgM antibodies).  The level of antibody detected cannot be used to determine protective immunity.  Please see the attached guidances for additional details and more in-depth guidance on appropriate use and interpretation of this testing.

Blood Gases & pH reference interval change: Blood gas testing at both campuses will be transitioned to a new platform on 11/18/2021.  On the new platform, the normal ranges have some changes from the normal ranges for our current blood gas analyzers.  Values reported in Epic will reflect these new normal ranges.
