[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - eGFR calculation update and Alpha1-Antitrypsin Phenotyping shortage

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing. In an attempt to keep us all on the same page, the Laboratory Formulary Committee will be regularly sending out emails with recent updates and guidances. Below are the short versions of relevant changes.  Attached is a more in-depth informational guide.

eGFR Calculation and Reporting Update:  Starting Thursday May 26th, 2022 reporting of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) will be updated in accordance with the recommendations from the National Kidney Foundation.  A single calculation will be used for all patients regardless of ethnicity.  Both male and female eGFR results will be reported in Epic for each patient.  Please see the attached guidance for more information.

Alpha1-Antitrypsin Phenotyping shortage: Due to a global raw material shortage from the manufacturer, the Alpha1-Antitrypsin Phenotyping, Serum (EPIC Code: LAB8927, Labcorp #095653) test has been discontinued indefinitely by all reference laboratories.  There are currently no alternatives for testing.  The test will not be orderable in EPIC until supply chain issues are resolved, and any requests for testing will be credited as testing cannot be performed at this time.
