[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - Change in Benzodiazepine testing and Spinal Muscular Atrophy testing

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.



SMA (SMN1/SMN2) Testing in-house: Starting February 5th, 2024, testing for the SMN1/SMN2 mutations in the SMA gene (one genetic cause of spinal muscular atrophy) will be performed in-house by the SUNY Upstate's Molecular Laboratory.  This testing is currently sent out to a reference laboratory.  Ordering of this testing can be done using the Molecular Diagnostic, Genetics (LABAP2706) Epic order.

Note: a separate genetic testing consent and insurance authorization are both required prior to performance of the testing.  Please see the attached guidance for more information.

Benzodiazepine Testing - new reagent:  Starting February 1st, 2024, the reagent used for Benzodiazepine testing on the Drugs of Abuse, Urine (LAB2810) Epic assay.  This reagent change will result in a significant increase in sensitivity of this testing as the new reagent is better able to recognize glucuronidated benzodiazepines.
