[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - Change in BHCG testing

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.



βHCG Testing Change:  Starting July 25th, 2024, two serum HCG assays will be available at both Downtown and Community Campuses.  HCG for Pregnancy is a rapid serum assay for intact βHCG while the current immunoassay for total serum βHCG will be renamed HCG as Tumor Marker.  As indicated by the names, HCG for Pregnancy assay should be used to determine if the patient is pregnant whereas the HCG as Tumor Marker assay should be used when tracking βHCG levels as part of oncologic care.  The iSTAT serum βHCG assay remains orderable, but we are still awaiting functional cartridges from the manufacturer to be able to run this assay.
