[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - Change in GFR reporting & Mixed venous blood gas testing

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.



Change to GFR reporting:  Standard calculation of GFR based on creatinine is not as reliable for patients > 80 years of age; therefore, this calculation has not been previously reported by SUNY Upstate labs.  Starting July 23rd 2026, calculation of GFR based on the creatinine will be reported for > 80 year patients with a guidance on interpretation and alternative testing.  Please see the attached guidance for further details.



Mixed venous blood gas testing:  Starting July 23rd 2026, blood gas testing on mixed venous samples (Blood Gas, Mixed Venous; LAB123151) will be available at SUNY Upstate Downtown campus with appropriate normal ranges, etc.  This change is needed for those services monitoring oxygenation status using mixed venous samples.  Please see the attached guidance for further details.
