[LabUpdates] Laboratory Formulary Committee Updates - Thyroid testing, 24 hour SPEP & IFIX, Blood culture pathogen panel

Medicine and laboratory testing are constantly changing.  The Laboratory Formulary Committee regularly sends out emails with new updates and changes.



Changes to Thyroid testing:  Starting June 25th 2026, a new Thyroid testing order panel Thyroid Function Algorithm (LAB8954) will be implemented to help guide appropriate usage of the various thyroid tests.  This order panel provides testing algorithms depending on the indication for testing.  This will allow for best utilization of resources, minimize inappropriate testing, and provide for best sequential testing on the initial sample to avoid missed testing.  Please see the attached guidance for further details.



24 hour Urine Protein Electrophoresis and Immunofixation:  Starting June 25th 2026, a new option for urine electrophoresis and immunofixation to be done using 24-hour urines vs random urine samples will be available.  The orders for testing using a 24-hour urine are Electrophoresis, 24 HR Urine (LAB123140) and Immunofixation, 24 HR Urine (LAB123139).  The current orders for random urine samples will be renamed to Protein Electrophoresis with TPU, Urine Random (LAB438) and Immunofixation with TPU, Urine Random (LAB6016). Blood Culture Pathogen Panel reporting:  Beginning June 17th 2026, the Blood Culture Pathogen Panel reports will display results for each analyte, consistent with how other Microbiology multiplexed molecular panels are reported.
