Topic:

Navigating Earliest Detection and Prevention of Hearing Loss Associated with Ototoxic Exposures

Presenter:

Gayla L. Poling, PhD

Chief Research Audiologist

Auditory and Vestibular Clinical Research Section

Neurotology Branch

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)

Lecture Summary:

Prevention is critical to the clinical management of individuals who experience hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance difficulties following medical, occupational or environmental exposures to ototoxicants. Hundreds of medications and chemical exposures are known to cause auditory and/or vestibular dysfunction known as ototoxicity with a range of individual impacts. Preventing or minimizing ototoxic damage is critical to preserve quality of life and provides care teams opportunities for identification of adverse effects, mitigation of hearing loss, and to support individualized interventions/accommodations. This presentation will review the current scope of ototoxicity management and highlight emerging approaches for earliest detection and prevention of ototoxicity in clinical care

The lecture will be on NIH Videocast<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:*2F*2Fvideocast.nih.gov*2Fwatch*2Fc71fe04a-3781-11f1-82c0-124f0a52e769/2/0101019e8a5cc679-6472cd8b-dda4-4e72-a88b-d4133be472aa-000000/fjpOLCIMvhzA9rhKb7E7sHqu2Rg6l_8FkHlvoknUr-I=452__;JSUlJQ!!GobTDDpD7A!J430z90rxahN-Xm_9dJWiLjP2xc-LKkEHqJFCGHqT1u1nSRpo8hSuLs5dMjZA5do71sfuEriGfyAiSaJJeWK8BwrHNM$> and archived for future viewing.
